Your Sharp Community Medical Group-affiliated primary care doctor (also called primary care physician or PCP) is your main doctor, and will become familiar with your health history, coordinate your care and help you get treatment from specialists when needed. Doctors who specialize in family medicine, internal medicine, preventative medicine, general practice and pediatrics are all considered primary care doctors.
All four specialties focus on helping you stay healthy and are types of primary care providers (PCPs).
Family medicine doctors care for patients of all ages
Internal medicine doctors see patients age 18 and older
Preventative medicine doctors focus on disease prevention and population health
General practice doctors provide broad medical care across a wide range of health needs
Most insurance plans allow you to switch your primary care doctor once per month. This includes changes between health systems. You do not need to wait for open enrollment as long as your new doctor accepts your health insurance.
It’s a good idea to find a primary care doctor you are comfortable with and who is conveniently located, so they can get to know your health needs and history over time.
If you want to change your Sharp Community primary care doctor, we make it easy to search for a new doctor based on location, specialty and more. Be sure to inform your health plan of any change to your primary care doctor.
Both are part of the Sharp HealthCare family and provide access to quality care throughout San Diego County. Sharp Community Medical Group is a network of affiliated practices such as SharpCare Medical Group, FocusHealth Medical Group and Perlman Clinic, and independent primary care doctors and specialists with offices across the San Diego and North San Diego County regions. Sharp Rees-Stealy is an integrated medical group that provides primary care, specialty care and support services within its own medical centers and clinics.
In short: Sharp Community offers members convenient, timely access to care through our large network of physicians and practices throughout San Diego County, while Sharp Rees-Stealy provides care through its integrated network of doctors working in Sharp Rees-Stealy facilities.

Existing patients: If you are an existing patient with a Sharp Community primary care doctor (meaning you have seen your doctor at least once), simply call their office to make an appointment. Some doctors also offer online scheduling through their practice portal or the Sharp app.
New patients: If you have selected a doctor, but have not yet had your first appointment, you can call their office directly.
Sharp Community Medical Group is an HMO network. This means you’ll need a referral from your primary care physician to see a specialist.
If you have a PPO plan, please contact your health insurance provider to confirm whether your coverage allows you to see a specialist without a referral.

As a Sharp Community Medical Group member, you can go to over 20 affiliated local urgent care centers, including partner locations like Marque Urgent Care and Concentra.
Important: Sharp Community members generally cannot use Sharp Rees-Stealy urgent care centers because Sharp Rees-Stealy is a separate medical group.
