Causes of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease
Smoking is the main cause of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). The more a person smokes, the more likely that person will develop COPD.
Other risk factors for COPD include:
- Exposure to certain gases or fumes at work
- Contact with heavy amounts of secondhand smoke and pollution
- Frequent use of cooking fire without proper ventilation
