All About Diabetes Management
What is Diabetes? Diabetes is a disease in which the body does not make enough insulin, or does not properly use insulin. Insulin is necessary for the body to use glucose for energy. When you eat food, the body breaks down all of the sugars and starches into glucose. Glucose is the basic fuel for cells in the body. Insulin signals the cells to “open up” and take the glucose from the blood.
Checking blood glucose levels and regularly seeing a physician is key to successful diabetes management Creating goals and working out a plan to reach those goals with your doctor is one of the most important ways to take care of your diabetes.
- Have your blood hemoglobin (A1C), cholesterol (LDL), blood pressure, and microalbumin (urine protein) levels checked at least once per year (more often if your physician recommends it)
